astora becomes INES member

INES aims to become the main point of contact for questions relating to natural gas storage arising from the energy transition

Berlin/Kassel. The WINGAS storage subsidiary astora has joined INES, the “Initiative Erdgasspeicher e.V.” (‘Natural Gas Storage Initiative’), based in Berlin, as of 1 May 2014. The aim of this association, which was founded in February of this year, is to enhance public awareness of the importance of natural gas storage facilities in the energy transition by pooling the interests of this sector.

As a central contact partner for policy-makers, media and the public, INES is devoted to ensuring a secure, efficient and cost-effective supply of natural gas. Other members of the initiative are Bayerngas GmbH, Berliner Erdgasspeicher GmbH & Co. KG, E.ON Gas Storage GmbH, EWE Gasspeicher GmbH, OMV Gas Storage Germany GmbH, RWE Gasspeicher GmbH, Statoil Deutschland Storage GmbH, Storengy Deutschland GmbH and VNG Gasspeicher GmbH.

“Natural gas storage facilities are the ideal partner for the energy transition since they can store renewable energies. And yet the importance of these facilities is not reflected appropriately in the current market environment,” Bernd Protze, chairman of the newly founded initiative, explains. “Diverging market regulations and role allocations among the market players are increasingly undermining the cost-effective operation of underground gas storage facilities,” Protze continues.

"Natural gas storage facilities are a key element of supply security,” astora managing director Andreas Renner says. He sees INES as a way of meeting the ever-increasing demands of policy-makers and markets in a strong alliance: "The changes on the energy markets call for the market rules and roles to be clearly structured, something which can only be done together. As one of the largest natural gas storage operators in Europe, naturally we want to be part of this process.”
