Natural gas storage facilities – guarantors for security of supply

The VI. International Conference on the safe and efficient operation of underground gas storage facilities has commenced in Kassel

Kassel, 7 October 2014. Over 100 energy and technology experts from Germany and abroad will be exchanging views in Kassel in the next few days on the occasion of the 6th International Storage Conference on current developments in the operation of natural gas storage facilities. The main topic of this year’s meeting from 7 to 8 October is the safe and efficient operation of natural gas storage facilities.

Storage facilities are a key element of the secure supply of natural gas, along with diversified sources of imports and transport routes, liquid trading markets and indigenous production. “In recent decades the European gas industry has reacted to the decline in indigenous production and growth in natural gas imports by constructing natural gas storage facilities”, explains Andreas Renner, Managing Director of the astora gas storage company. Currently, it is possible to store about a fifth of the European Union’s annual gas consumption in gas storage facilities.

“The companies are continuously further developing technologies and processes in order to improve the efficiency while maintaining high safety standards”, Mr. Renner continues. Thus, the conference in Kassel primarily offers storage company representatives an opportunity to exchange views on new technologies and trends in automation. The participants will also discuss current developments and standards in environmental protection, as well as the safety and maintenance of natural gas storage facilities. Along with numerous presentations and panel discussions the programme also includes a technical excursion.
