Natural gas storage Rehden: Withdrawal operation resumes

Kassel, 2 February 2023. The natural gas storage Rehden will be back in operation on Friday, 3 February 2023 at 6:00 a.m., earlier than previously reported. Due to a technical defect, a deflagration occurred at a flare on Tuesday, 31 January 2023. For safety reasons, the storage facility was taken out of operation and the facilities were also brought into a safe condition.

In the last two days, the storage facility was thoroughly checked by the staff on site and in Kassel in coordination with the responsible authorities, which enabled the technical defect to be identified. It was possible to restore the withdrawal operation. The damages identified during the investigation will be repaired in a timely manner so that the injection operation can also be resumed. The incident still has no impact on the security of supply.

astora GmbH, based in Kassel, is part of the SEFE Group and one of the largest natural gas storage operators in Europe. In order to secure natural gas supplies to Europe, astora also operates and markets 5/6 of the capacity in the Jemgum cavern storage facility on the German-Dutch border.
